Klara is a twelve year-old German immigrant and mutant, or "wonder", living in New York City in the year 1907. She has the power to control plants, a talent she considered wonderful but her mother saw as a curse and ungodly. She was married off to an older man, Herr Prast, and sent to America with him because Klara's mother couldn't handle a child with powers. Her life was fairly simple, but all of that changed when she met two strange girls named Karolina Dean and Molly Hayes...
